Leibniz Universität Hannover - Institute of Legal Informatics
The Institute of Legal Informatics (IRI) at the Leibniz Universität Hannover is the oldest establishment dedicated to scientific research on legal problems of Information and Communication Technologies nationwide. IRI undertakes research and education activities in information technology law covering the full spectrum of the discipline. Research topics covered have included data protection law, health law, international data traffic and medical data protection law. In addition, IRI has been instrumental in the creation of an innovative Data Protection Framework for ACGT (FP6-IST-026996) that enables researchers to share their data while simultaneously protecting the privacy of the data subjects. Other prominent projects include the DAWUM project on data protection and e-government, the EVDABIDOK project on the compliance of the Austrian education documentation act with European data protection regulations and the DATEMBIDOK project, focusing on the amendment of the Austrian education documentation act with special regard to data protection. IRI will bring its legal expertise and experience in similar related projects in particular tackling those obstacles hindering the legal and ethically correct exchange of personal data based on informed consent in running and planned European projects.
Custodix
Custodix is a private limited company established in 2000 specialized in data protection solutions for eHealth. Today Custodix is recognized as one of the most advanced and reliable Trusted Service Providers (TSPs) in the Healthcare sector providing both consultancy and technical privacy protection solutions. Its data protection services are supported by a combination of high-level technical and legal expertise in privacy protection and e-security and a sound experience with a number of advanced e-security solutions such as PKI, VPN, Web Services security frameworks, time-stamping and more.
Custodix helps businesses deal with all security and privacy related aspects of modern data management (cf. European Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC, 2001/20/EC, 2005/28/EC, the WHO GCP by offering end-to-end solutions for data protection in e-Clinical Trials, disease management and other longitudinal studies. Custodix has an international customer-base, deploying services in Europe, Asia and Australia. Customers are both commercial companies and governmental research organizations.
In its short existence, Custodix has already been involved in several e-privacy and e-security IST projects (FP5, FP6, FP7). These include the EU flagship project: ACGT (Advanced Clinico-Genomic Trials on Cancer, developing a Biomedical GRID infrastructure for sharing clinical and genomic expertise, 2006-2010) and the TAS3 (Trusted Architecture for Securely Shared Services) project developing an architecture with trusted services to manage and process distributed personal information, 2008-2011.
Custodix area of expertise is data protection, with a strong emphasis on Privacy Enhancing Technology for medical data collection. Custodix is one of the first and few Trusted Service Providers (TSPs) in the Healthcare sector
Katholieke Universiteit Leuven - Interdisciplinary Centre for Law & ICT (ICRI)
The Interdisciplinary Centre for Law & ICT is and has been involved in several European projects, both in the Sixth and Seventh EU Framework Program, such as PRIME, WALKONWEB, BEINGRID, SERENITY, DYVINE, PRIME LIFE, PICOS, TURBINE, TAS3 and SCOVIS. Furthermore the centre is involved in the FIDIS Network of Excellence (the Future of Identity in the Information Society). Since 2004, ICRI is also the main legal expert involved in the IBBT, Interdisciplinary Institute for BroadBand Technology, a research institute focusing on R&D in the ICT sector established by the Flemish government. These projects along with many others have provided ICRI with an extensive experience in carrying out European wide legal research. Moreover, these projects allowed ICRI to develop an international network of contacts in all the Member States of the European Union and beyond.
Technological Education Institution of Crete - Department of Applied Informatics and Multimedia
The Department of Applied Informatics and Multimedia was established in 2000 within the Faculty of Applied Technologies of the Technological Education Institution of Crete. Today, the Department has grown into a fully operational educational and research unit with more than 2,500 undergraduate students. In parallel to its educational goals, the Department operates a number of Research and Development laboratories. Amongst those research laboratories is the Biomedical informatics and eHealth technologies lab, focusing on the innovative application of mainstream computer science methods, tools and technologies in the domain of translational medicine, bioinformatics and eHealth.
Universität des Saarlandes - Department of Paediatric Oncology and Haematology
The Saarland University was founded in 1948 in co-operation with France with a dedicated international orientation from the beginning. The University has 8 faculties: Law and Economics, Medicine, Humanities I-III, Natural Sciences and Technology I-III with a current total of 15,500 students of whom 7 percent are foreign students. At the Faculty of Medicine (University Hospital), located in Homburg / Saarland more than 1,800 people are currently studying medicine with 36 hospital institutions treating more than 54,000 inpatients and nearly 190,000 outpatients each year.
The Department of Paediatric Oncology and Haematology is responsible for the treatment of children and teenagers in the Saarland and the surrounding area. The focus of research at the Department of Paediatric Oncology and Haematology is nephroblastoma (clinical study and trial and basic research in cooperation with different institutes) as well as translational research fostering IT technology in clinical trials. This part of the research is mainly done in two EU projects (ACGT FP6-IST-026996) and ContraCancrum FP7-ICT- 223979). A third EU project (TUMOR) is currently under negotiation.
